Summer Treats For Dogs

June 15, 2023

Does your canine companion get super excited at the very thought of a yummy snack? Fido is always cute, but he’s never more adorable than he is when he’s angling for a treat. With the hottest time of the year approaching, you’ll want to offer your pooch some cool and refreshing snacks. A Clermont County vet offers some suggestions in this article.

Ice Cream

Ice cream is a beloved summer snack, and a perfect treat for a sweltering day. Did you know that you can get some made just for Fido? Several companies, including Ben and Jerry’s, are now making ice cream specifically for Man’s Best Friend. You can also make your own. You’ll want to start with a base. You can mix and match any of the following ingredients: ripe bananas, natural peanut butter, pureed pumpkin, sodium-free broth, fat-free yogurt, and/or baby food. (Note: if you use baby food, check the label to make sure it doesn’t contain anything unsafe.)

You can customize Fido’s treats by adding things like bacon bits, kibble, shredded meat or cheese, and/or safe fruits and veggies, like peas, carrots, blueberries, or spinach. Try a few different things, and see what your four-legged pal likes best.

Frozen Snacks

You can also make Fido other frozen snacks. Put things like kibble shredded meat, or safe fruits and veggies in an ice cube tray, and then pour water or sodium-free broth over it. You can experiment with different flavor combinations. Use chicken, peas, and carrots with chicken broth, or try beef and cheese with beef broth. You can also mix shredded chicken with fat-free yogurt in a blender and then freeze overnight. Your pet will happily sample them all!

Frozen Chews

Does your furry best friend still enjoy chewing? Look for a chew toy that you can stuff with things, such as a Kong toy. Add baby food, peanut butter, ripe bananas, or applesauce, and freeze. Instant happy pup!

Whole Foods

Fido can have some people food, such as plain boneless meat, fish, or chicken;  cooked eggs; and small amounts of cheese. Only offer things you know are safe. Never give your furry friend anything that contains garlic, onions, chocolate, avocado, meat on the bone, grapes or raisins, or alcohol. Ask your vet for more information.
