Are you looking for a small pet that’s a little different but super cute? A Chinchilla might fit the bill! These guys are still somewhat uncommon, but they really are adorable. However, they do have some specific care needs. A Greater Cincinnati vet lists some key ones below.
Your pint-sized pal will need a good diet. You can give your pet high-quality pellets for their main meals. Chinchillas should also have fresh Timothy hay available at all times. Your pet can also have small amounts of fruits and veggies. As for treats, you can offer things like rose hips and dried organic dandelion greens. Ask your vet for specific advice.
Chinchillas like climbing, so they need cages that offer plenty of vertical space. You’ll need to add proper bedding, substrate, and accessories, such as hides, hammocks, and climbing branches. Chinchillas do not do well in the heat: your pint-sized pal’s home should be in a room that doesn’t go above 80F.
Chinchillas can get quite lonely without any buddies. We recommend getting at least two. Just be sure to only keep same-sex furballs together.
Your little pals will enjoy having toys to play on. Properly socialized chinchillas like to be snuggled and held. Just be very gentle when handling your pets!
Chinchilla’s teeth don’t need to be brushed, but you will need to provide your tiny furballs with lots of chew toys, such as wooden sticks or mineral blocks. Ask your vet for recommendations.
You’ll need to remove waste and uneaten food from your pets’ cage daily. At least once a week, deep clean the habitat with a bleach solution.
Chinchillas need to take dust baths a few times a week. Keep an eye on your furry pals during these, and remove any dust that’s still on their fur after about a half hour. Never give your chinchillas regular baths, though you can brush them with a soft-bristled brush.
Just like any other pets, chinchillas are susceptible to illness and injury. Watch for signs of trouble. These may include hair loss, lethargy, respiratory issues, discharge from the eyes or nose, diarrhea, and weight loss. Call your vet immediately if you notice anything wrong.
