Tips for Adopting a Senior Dog

November 01, 2020

November is Adopt A Senior Dog Month! If you’re looking for a new canine friend to complete your household, please consider getting an older pooch! A local Greater Cincinnati veterinarian offers some advice on adopting Fido below.

Be Ready To Commit

It’s absolutely heartbreaking to see older dogs in shelters. However, it’s even sadder to hear stories of them being adopted, only to be brought back later. Before adopting Fido, make sure that you are ready, willing, and able to commit to caring for him for the rest of his life. Adoption is forever!

Petproofing

Although most senior dogs have outgrown their need to chew, it’s best not to take chances. Remove anything that could be unsafe, such as toxic plants, chemicals, medication, and small or sharp objects. If you have a yard, make sure that the fence is secure, and remove potential hazards, like debris or toys. Better safe than sorry!

Do Some Shopping

Fido will need some doggy necessities. Look for things that will keep him comfortable. Pick a good bed for your furry pal, so he can sleep comfortably. We recommend orthopedic beds for older dogs. Your canine buddy may also appreciate raised dishes, soft toys, and maybe some pet ramps or stairs.

Be Patient

Changes are tough for our furry friends. Fido may need time to feel at ease in a new place. Most senior dogs already know basic commands, like Sit and Lay Down. However, Fido may need to get used to some of the rules of his new home, such as not getting on the couch. Be patient and consistent with your new pup.

Start A Schedule

Dogs feel most secure when they’re on a set routine. Try to feed, walk, and play with Fido at the same time every day.

Meet The Vet

One of the first things you’ll need to do is bring Fido in for a full exam. (We love meeting new patients!) Most likely, your pooch will already have been fixed. However, you’ll need to make sure he’s microchipped and current on his vaccines and parasite control products.

Enjoy Tail Wags

Many people who have adopted older dogs insist that they’re the best pets. Fido’s sweet demeanor, calm temperament, and adorable face will win you over in no time!
