October Is Adopt A Shelter Dog Month! We’re happy to help put the ‘spot’ light on this wonderful cause. There are just far too many cute, lovable pooches in shelters, hoping someone will adopt them. A local Greater Cincinnati vet discusses adopting Fido below.
There are some great reasons to get your canine pal from a shelter. For one thing, you’ll be able to pick your pooch out from a lineup of adorable pups. Shelters have dogs of all breeds, ages, shapes, sizes, and colors. Whether you have something specific in mind, or are just going in with an open heart, you’ll likely find the perfect pup waiting for you. You’ll also likely save some money, as adopting from a shelter is typically much cheaper than going through a pet store or breeder. Plus, it helps other animals, both by freeing up space at the shelter and supporting them financially.
Before bringing your new canine buddy home, you’ll need to make a run to the pet store. Your list should include things like bedding, dishes, grooming supplies, toys, treats, a leash and collar, waste baggies, and a tie-out line. Put Fido’s things in a quiet spot at first, especially if you have other pets. That way, your furry pal will have a safe, comfy spot to relax and settle in.
Make sure that your home and yard are safe for Fido. Remove or secure anything that could be dangerous. This includes things like toxic plants; lawn and garden chemicals; exposed wires and cords; laundry piles; medicine; cleaning products; plastic bags and ties; and anything small or sharp. If you have a yard, make sure to pull any toxic plants. You’ll also want to make sure your fencing is secure.
Going to a new home can be a bit overwhelming to our canine companions. Fido will need time to adjust. We recommend taking him for a long walk before bringing him inside. This will help him burn off any anxious energy he has, and let him ‘reset’ a bit. Get your pet started out on his new routine right away, but don’t force attention on him. With love, patience, and great TLC, you’ll have that tail going in no time!
